How our sauces came to life

I didn’t set out to build a hot sauce company.
I just wanted to make food that felt good — and tasted even better.

When we opened the original Superfood Bar in New Orleans, we were lucky to be in the middle of one of the most exciting food cities in the world. The flavors there are bold, soulful, unforgettable. But while the food scene is full of magic, a lot of it is also heavy — fried, creamy, rich, or packed with processed ingredients.

It’s the kind of food that makes you happy in the moment… but not always later.

That contrast stuck with me — and it shaped how we cooked at Superfood Bar.
Our mission was simple: serve food that feels good after you eat it.

That meant going back to basics.
We kept the pantry clean, the ingredient lists short, and the cooking honest. We worked with vegetables, grains, fruits, fermented ingredients, herbs, spices, and time. The challenge was to make it delicious — and that challenge became the creative part.

  

A Sauce We Needed, So We Made It

One day, we needed a hot sauce for our black bean burrito. But not just any sauce — we wanted something bold and complex that could brighten a dish, not overpower it. Something that worked with the body, not against it.

So we started experimenting.

Instead of sugar, we used whole organic dates.
Instead of processed vinegar, we used raw apple cider vinegar — the only kind we stocked in the kitchen.
Goji berries were already on the menu for their mellow sweetness and nutrient density, so they made it into the recipe too.
And from there, we layered in fermented chili, raw garlic, and unrefined sea salt.

It was spicy — but not just hot.
It was grounded, balanced, and alive.
And most importantly: it made us feel good.

Why We Keep It Simple

Over the years, I’ve tasted a lot of hot sauces — some fiery, some complex, and some just hot for hot’s sake. A lot of them were delicious in the moment… but left you feeling weighed down, foggy, or off afterward.

That’s why we do things differently.

Our sauces are made to work with your body, not just your taste buds.
They’re built with whole, functional ingredients:

  • Fermented chili for depth and digestion
  • Raw garlic for kick and immune support
  • Unrefined sea salt for balance and trace minerals
